Bar Review: Slide Bar, Oxford St, Sydney

Slide Bar El Circo

Hi world and happy Friday!

Today I’m going to kick off my monthly bar review section with a review of Slide Bar, located in the always colourful Oxford St, Sydney.

I hadn’t heard of Slide Bar before, but recently attended as part of a friends hen’s night.

What a hidden gem this place is! With a pretty unobtrusive and discreet entrance (the only real reason I knew we were in the right place was a circus style poster out the front and a huge line!) you’re totally un-prepared for what’s inside.

The best possible way I can think to describe this place is the Alice In Wonderland, Rabbit Hole of bars. Let me explain.

Slide describes it’s El Circo show as:

“Part circus, part cabaret, part burlesque and entirely original, El’ Circo is a truly magical experience that captivates, the moment you enter the room.”

The unobtrusive front door leads you in to a cavernous room with trapeze hoops hanging from the ceiling, huge chandeliers and a brightly lit front stage. You’re quickly ushered to your seats by one of the many lovely staff, all dressed up Cabaret/Circus style in head to toe black complimented by glitter and top hats. Once sat down, your drinks orders are taken and you are left in the capable hands of one of the many magicians who will dazzle you (and make you laugh) with their illusions.

The show itself was magical. Trapeze artists, contortionists and just general freaky wow performances (the clowns were a little scary!) entertain you in a series of performances all accompanied by music.

Which leads us to the menu. Now it gets really crazy. For the Saturday night show we booked the 9 course degustation menu. Entwined with the show, it featured molecular gastronomy-esque delights such as Supermodel Popcorn (a hint, this one isn’t very filling but smells delicious!), Chicken and Tarragon cupcakes and deconstructed Paella.

At the end of the night they ask everyone to get on stage and dance – all the hen’s and birthday girls (and boys) first of course! It’s an awesome way to finish off the night, especially after a few of Slides yummy cocktails!

If you’re looking for a hens night with a twist, I highly recommend El Circo at Slide.
